The conference entitled "Increasing burden of cancer – how can it be reduced?" represents the main event of the presidency in the area of health, and will be organised with the support of the European Commission. Cancer is a disease which profoundly affects each individual and those close to them, and also has a major impact on health and social care spending. Cancer is also the second most important cause of death in the developed countries, and shares numerous common factors of risk with cardiovascular diseases. Successful control of the burden of cancer will require an integrated approach on all levels, from the prevention of disease, organised screening and early detection to optimal treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care, as well as investment in research in all these areas. |
