On Slovenia's initiative, the European Police College (CEPOL) is organising a conference on police cooperation with the Western Balkan countries in the field of education and training of police officers, which will be held from 17 to 19 March at Grand Hotel Toplice in Bled.

The conference will be devoted to presenting CEPOL and police training institutions in the Western Balkans, exchanging experience and searching for cooperation possibilities in the area of police training, especially in combating organised crime. The Organised Crime Threat Assessment (OCTA), which is prepared by Europol every year and is used by the Member States in planning their operational priorities, will also be discussed, along with a proposal of the Slovenian Presidency that such assessments be drawn up for the countries of South Eastern Europe as well.

Besides Slovenian representatives, conference participants will include directors of police colleges and senior police officers responsible for education and training in the Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia). The conference will also be attended by the Director of CEPOL and representatives of European Union Member States, the Council of Europe, OSCE, Europol, Frontex and others. The main speaker will be Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister of the Interior and President of the JHA Council.

On Wednesday, 19 March 2008, at 1 p.m., after the conference has been closed, Nevenka Tomovič, Chair of the CEPOL Governing Board, and Ulf Göransson, Director of CEPOL, will give statements to the press about the conference and its main topics at Grand Hotel Toplice, Bled.
