More: | At the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN), the ministers will address and presumably adopt conclusions resulting from the discussions held at the informal meeting of ECOFIN on 4–5 April 2008 at Brdo pri Kranju, regarding the EU financial supervision and crisis management, as well as the efficiency of expenditure on social transfers and education in the framework of the quality of public finance, and regarding the establishment of an integrated financing mechanism for the Western Balkans. In the area of taxation, the ministers will address two issues: measures to combat tax fraud in the area of value added tax, and savings taxation. Within the framework of financial services, the ministers will discuss and adopt conclusions on financial education and the White Paper on mortgage credits. The Commission will brief the Council on regulatory dialogue with third countries, while the ministers will address current economic issues within the framework of preparations for the EU-U.S. summit. The Slovenian Presidency will present preparations for the meeting of European and Asian finance ministers (ASEM) to be held on 16 June in South Korea. The ministers will also discuss and adopt conclusions on a strategic document for a customs union of the 21st century, which the Commission has prepared on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the customs union celebrated this year. The Commission will also present a preliminary proposal for the EU budget for 2009, while over lunch the ministers will talk about further platforms for discussion on the economic impact of reduced VAT rates to achieve political objectives in individual sectors.
