Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on Kenya

The European Union welcomes the agreement between Kenyan President Kibaki and opposition leader Odinga on the formation of a Coalition Government. As partners in a Coalition Government, the leaders of Kenya show their commitment to work together in good faith to promote the greater interests of their nation as a whole.

The Coalition Government provides the means for the leaders of Kenya to proceed with the national reconciliation and dialogue agreed upon on 28 February. The EU looks forward to working with the new Government of Kenya, and states its readiness to support it in the implementation of a coherent and far-reaching reform agenda, to address the fundamental root causes of recurrent conflict and to create a better, more secure and more prosperous Kenya.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
