Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on Zimbabwe

The European Union is following the situation in Zimbabwe closely and welcomes the holding of the Extraordinary SADC Summit to discuss Zimbabwe, hosted by President Mwanawasa of Zambia in his capacity of Chair of SADC. It shares SADC's concern about the situation and welcomes its efforts to find a regional solution.

The European Union supports the Summit's call for the expeditious release of the Presidential election results, in accordance with the due process of law. It reiterates its concern at the prolonged and unexplained delay in releasing the Presidential results which is undermining the credibility of the process.

The European Union expresses its deep concern about the current deteriorating situation in the field of human rights and the increasing reports of violent incidents.

The European Union reiterates the importance of respect for democratic principles and for the elections to be a credible reflection of the free and democratic will of the Zimbabwean people.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as the Republic of Moldova and Armenia align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
