Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the decision of the Pakistani Election Commission to postpone general elections until 18 February 2008

The EU took note of the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone general elections until 18 February. The EU strongly reiterates the importance of holding free and fair elections by this new date, which should allow for a democratic and transparent electoral process under proper security conditions.

The EU calls upon all involved parties to accept the decision of the Election Commission with dignity and restraint, and participate fully in the general elections, ensuring a truly democratic outcome. The EU urges the Pakistani authorities to improve conditions for elections in line with international standards.

At this stage, overall stability in the country and further progress on the path towards democracy are among the most important challenges for Pakistan. The EU continues to support the Pakistani people in addressing these challenges. Elements looking to destabilise Pakistan should not be allowed to succeed.
