Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the Comoros

The EU recalls its continued support to the action undertaken by the AU and to the preservation of the integrity and unity of the Union of the Comoros on the basis of the Fomboni (2001) and Moroni (2003) agreements.

The EU underlines the importance of maintaining a peaceful approach to the crisis, based on dialogue, and avoiding a deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

The EU expresses its profound concern about the allegations of Human Rights violations on the island of Anjouan.

The EU expresses its support to AU action in favor of a peaceful solution to the crisis and the organization of new elections on Anjouan island.

The EU has taken note of the decision of extension by one more month of AU measures against Anjouan, taken by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) in its meeting on 21 January. It stands ready to offer assistance to the AU for the purpose of implementing the restrictive measures taken by the AU PSC to induce a negotiated solution to the crisis.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
