At the mid-point of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008 and on the conclusion of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a concert will be held in Brussels on 13 June 2008, jointly organised by the City of Brussels, the European Commission and the Slovenian Government Communication Office.
On the central square of the Grand' Place, rhythms from different nations will merge under the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue slogan 'Together in diversity'. On the programme is music from StrojMachine (Slovenia), the Karim Baggili Quintet (Belgium) and Gipsy.cz (Czech Republic). StrojMachine combines powerful and complex futuristic rhythms with unusual self-made instruments. The Karim Baggili Quintet performs passionate music based on a range of traditional Spanish and Asian rhythms. Gipsy.cz breaks down the barriers between world, Roma, hip hop and pop music.
The keynote speakers at the official reception being held prior to the concert will be Mr Freddy Thielemans, Mayor of Brussels, Mr Jan Figel', European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, and Mr Borut Trekman, Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Brussels.
