The President of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, today visited Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, thus starting his three-day tour of the Middle East, which falls within the preparations for an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers to be held next week at Brdo pri Kranju.

The main subject discussed with President Mubarak was the Middle East Peace Process. Minister Rupel expressed his concern about recent events, which claimed many victims on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, as well as about the extremely critical humanitarian situation in Gaza. “It is our duty to encourage the Israelis and the Palestinians to resume talks,” stressed the Slovenian Foreign Minister. Further, Minister Rupel and President Mubarak also exchanged opinions on various other issues, including Lebanon, Syria and Iran.
