Environment

moreThe state of the environment is to a large extent an indicator of the general state of a society. Constant care for the environment and a gradual improvement of the state of the environment are key priorities of the European Union. With a view to directing European environmental policies and strengthening the environmental aspect of sustainable development, the ministers of the environment of EU countries and the European Commissioner of the Environment meet four times per year at Environmental Council meetings. During Slovenia's Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2008, Environmental Councils will take place on 3 March in Brussels and on 5 June in Luxembourg.

Key Issues

Environmental issues concern many areas of animate and inanimate nature which are linked and co-dependent in various ways. During Slovenia's Presidency, special attention will be given to issues regarding the struggle against climate change and the preservation of biodiversity.
