Slovenian Culture before an EU Audience

Slovenia has been confered the honour and responsibility to preside over the Council of the EU in the first half of 2008. During the preparations it was agreed that Slovenia would present itself with a cultural and promotional programme, since the Presidency is a good opportunity to promote Slovenian culture in the wider world – where few people know that it gave birth to a nation and a country, and that it prides itself with remarkable artistic achievements. The promotional programme brings together tradition and contemporary art, focusing both on indigenous elements and the connection between Slovenian and European cultural movements. It includes presentations of some of the best achievements of Slovenian art, out of which grew Slovenia’s national and specific cultural identity.

Most of the cultural events focus on contemporary practice and its diversity, and local nuances. They will be performed and presented by the best Slovenian artists. More complex projects will also shed light on the history of Slovenian culture. The programme was drafted in light of the fact that our country is presenting itself to the EU audience for the fist time; therefore it is important that it draws attention to its indigenous art and culture, and the fact that we have been always a part of the European cultural traditions and art.

The themes of the events held in Slovenia are mainly connected with the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008. Slovenia launched this at the beginning of January with an opening ceremony in Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana. During the presidency, special attention will be given to the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar, the founder and consolidator of Slovenian literary language and presentations of the vast body of work of the renowned architect Jože Plečnik, who left a mark on Vienna, Prague and particularly Ljubljana and some other towns in Slovenia. Visitors will be able to see a selection of his work at an exhibition in Brussels.

Much of the cultural promotion will be organised by the diplomatic and consular representations of the Republic of Slovenia.
