Janez Lenarčič - State Secretary for European Affairs

Mr Janez Lenarčič, born in Ljubljana in 1967, holds a degree in law. For his achievements during his studies, he received an award on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Law Faculty in Ljubljana, and for his bachelor’s thesis, the ‘Dr Slavko Zore Award’.

After graduating, he took up his first post at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1992, where he was first assigned to work on international economic relations. Soon after completing his internship, he worked in the Department for Multilateral Relations.

From 1994 to 1999, he was posted to the Permanent Representation of Slovenia to the UN in New York, where he served, inter alia, as the alternate representative of Slovenia on the UN Security Council.

Upon returning to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he worked in the Department for Political Multilateral Relations and in the Minister's Office. In 2001, he was promoted to adviser to the Prime Minister on international relations; a year later he was nominated as State Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office and alternate member of the Convention on the Future of the European Union.

In 2003, when the Convention had concluded, he became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Vienna, where he took up the office of Head of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Slovenia to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). In 2005, he was Chairman of the Permanent Council of the OSCE in Vienna.

In January 2006, he was appointed by the Slovenian Government as State Secretary for European Affairs, his term of office beginning on 1 May 2006. In May 2006, he also became leader of the Enlarged EU Presidency Working Group.

Since December 2006, Mr Lenarčič has been the representative of the Prime Minister in the process for the reform of basic EU treaties (the so-called Focal Point).

As State Secretary for European Affairs, he is responsible for cooperation between the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament during Slovenia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2008. 

He is fluent in French and English.
