Venue: | Brdo |
Policy area: | Justice and Home Affairs |
Type of event: | Informal Ministerial Meetings |
More: | A set of three Communications which the Commission issued in February 2008 will provide the basis for the Ministerial Conference's examination of the subject of the management of the external borders of the European Union: 1. on the evaluation of Frontex (the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union); 2. a communication on a possible entry-exit system and registered travellers programme; and 3. a communication on the European external borders surveillance system - EUROSUR. Slovenia wishes to start the Member States' debate on the evaluation of Frontex by examining the Agency's work to date and looking at improvements that might be made in future. The Presidency will strive to ensure that the Justice and Home Affairs Council in June adopts conclusions setting out short- and medium-term objectives for the Agency's future activities. With regard to the entry-exit system and registration system, Slovenia's aim is to identify how such a system could help improve the effectiveness of border control, resulting in tighter internal security within the Schengen area, while also respecting the fundamental rights of passengers. The EUROSUR debate should be focused on the future of the management and surveillance of external borders. |
