The EU Presidency strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Beirut this morning which resulted in the loss of several human lives and injuries. The EU Presidency conveys its deepest condolences, sympathy and solidarity to the families of the victims and calls upon the Government of Lebanon to bring to justice the perpetrators, organisers and sponsors of this and other assassinations.
The EU Presidency deeply regrets that until now a solution to the current political stalemate has not been found and calls upon the parties to use the timeframe until 11 February to work flexibly and responsibly in order to elect the new president in a spirit of consensus, in full respect of Lebanese constitutional norms and democratic institutions, and free of outside interference.
