The EU Presidency called on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia not to lose sight

The EU Presidency called on the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia today not to lose sight of its strategic national goal of joining the Euro-Atlantic integrations, which is essential for country's future, as well as of great importance for the entire region. According to the Presidency, the decision at Bucharest NATO summit should not put that future under question. The Presidency commended the country for their efforts to pursue reforms, to contribute to regional stability and to build a multiethnic society. It regretted that negotiations on the name issue have not yet produced a successful outcome. Talks should now be resumed without delay, with the aim to be concluded sooner rather than later.

The Slovenian EU Presidency urged all political leaders in the country, both in Government and in opposition, to look to the future in confidence, remain united behind the national consensus on joining the Euro-Atlantic integrations, and to use well the time available before the autumn Progress Report to intensify reforms in order to meet the conditions necessary towards opening of accession negotiations later this year.
