Participation of Minister Rupel in the EU Troika – Arab Maghreb Union Meeting

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and President of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, Dr  Dimitrij Rupel, will attend the EU Troika – Arab Maghreb Union meeting in Rabat on 21 and 22 January 2008.

The Arab Maghreb Union was founded in 1989. The members of the organisation are Algeria, Morocco, Mauretania, Libya and Tunisia. The aims of the organisation are progress in the area of free movement of persons, goods and services, and cooperation in the political field.

This is the first formal meeting of the EU and the Arab Maghreb Union, which will assess possibilities for developing more intense relations in several areas of common interest, such as trade, energy and transport.

The ministerial meeting will be attended by the European Commissioner for External Relations, Dr Ferrero-Waldner, and by representatives of the member states of the Arab Maghreb Union: the foreign ministers of Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauretania, the deputy foreign minister of Algeria and the secretary general of the organisation.
