Achievements of the Slovenian Presidency in the areas of education, young people and sport exceeded all expectations

"I am very pleased with the Slovenian Presidency since we have successfully concluded the 18-month programme of the Trio Presidency and realised all key priorities in the area of education, training, young people and culture," declared the current President of the Education, Youth and Culture Council, Slovenian Minister of Education and Sport, Dr Milan Zver, today at the European Parliament. At the meeting of the European Parliament Committee on Culture and Education, Minister Zver presented the achievements of the Slovenian Presidency in the areas of education, training, young people and sport. At the conclusion, the MEPs agreed that the Slovenian Presidency had exceeded all expectations and was very successful in their work.

First, Dr Milan Zver presented the main achievements of the 18-month programme of the Trio Presidency, highlighting in particular the added value of the Slovenian Presidency.

"Remarkable progress was made in education and training, as we achieved greater visibility of education within the Lisbon Strategy, greater visibility of innovation and education, and greater visibility of multilingualism and intercultural dialogue, as well as laying down the key foundations for the process and development of education and training after 2010," asserted Minister Zver.

In the area of young people, Minister Zver emphasised the adopted Resolution on young people with fewer opportunities, through which the Slovenian Presidency set up the legal framework and proposals for greater participation of young people with fewer opportunities. During the Slovenian Presidency, special emphasis was devoted to the encouragement of voluntary activities of young people, and the structural dialogue with them has been reinforced.

In the conclusion of his address, Minister Zver presented the achievements in the area of sport, stating that "During the Slovenian Presidency, Europe again became the major actor in combating doping." Dr Zver also added that a remarkable achievement of Slovenia's Presidency of the EU Council was realised by organising the informal meeting of Ministers of Sport, where for the first time to-date European civil society and politics joined together and emphasised the great importance of sport in society and the economy.
