Foreign Minister Rupel meets with Iranian Foreign Minister Mottaki

The President of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Stockholm on the margins of the review conference on Iraq. They mainly discussed the situation in the region and Iran’s role in it. Minister Rupel emphasised the role Iran plays in the region and drew attention to international initiatives, including the results of the meeting of the 3+3 group in London on 2 May. The EU pays particular attention to the issue of the Iranian nuclear programme, with regard to which Minister Rupel referred to the position of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, who has recently published a new report on the issue.

Minister Rupel expressed his wish that Iran would take an active role in the endeavours of international organisations to stabilise the region. The ministers also exchanged information and discussed their expectations relating to the upcoming visit by the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, to Iran.
