IAEA - Board of Governors: Report of the Commission of Eminent Persons on the future of the Agency ('2020 Study') (Vienna)

Statement of the Republic of Slovenia on behalf of the European Union by mr. Bojan Bertoncelj, Chargé d`Affaires for Multilateral Affairs, Permanent Mission of Slovenia

Mr. Chairman,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union.

Mr. Chairman,

The EU would like to thank the Chairman of the Commission of Eminent Persons Dr. Ernesto Zedillo for his introduction of the Report of the Commission of Eminent Persons on the future of the Agency issued on 23 May 2008.

The EU notes the qualifier in the Preface to the Report and that while the members of the Commission endorse the report as a whole, they do not each subscribe to every statement and recommendation in the text.

Mr. Chairman,

The EU wishes to reiterate its strong support to the IAEA and considers it highly important that the Agency pursues actively its work towards 2020 and beyond within the framework of the Agency’s statutory mandate.

The EU looks forward to studying the recommendations in the Report and to continuing its close interaction with the Secretariat on ways and means of further improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the Agency towards 2020 and beyond.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
