Informal meeting of the Working Group of Legal and Technical Experts on Liability and Redress for damage resulting from the transboundary movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

Today, 2 April 2008, an informal meeting of the Working Group of Legal and Technical Experts on Liability and Redress for damage resulting from the transboundary movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (hereinafter: EU Working Group) is being held in Ljubljana. The meeting was convened in order to prepare a summary and assessment of the conclusions adopted at the meeting of the international working group for this area, held in Columbia from 12 to 19 March 2008.

The informal meeting will be devoted to drafting an amended EU position for negotiations at the 4th Conference on Biosafety pursuant to the Cartagena Protocol, to be held in Bonn in May 2008, where international rules and procedures regarding liability and redress for damage resulting from the transboundary movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) are planned to be adopted.

Today, the EU Working Group will also address the change in the Council's negotiation guidelines to the Commission, on the basis of which the Commission, in cooperation with the Council, will represent the European Union's position on this subject at the international negotiations.
